Southern Right Whale Route: The fascination of the giants of the seas
Between July and November, the southern coast of Santa Catarina becomes the stage for a spectacle of nature: the arrival of the majestic southern right whales. Migrating from the cold waters of Antarctica and Patagonia, they choose the southern coast of Santa Catarina as their natural breeding ground, warming hearts and boosting tourism in the region.
With the mission of harnessing the full potential of this attraction, the Southern Right Whale Route (RBF) was created, an initiative conceived by Sebrae/SC and partially executed by Girus Soluções em Turismo, in partnership with the municipalities of Garopaba, Imbituba, and Laguna. The RBF is not just a route for whale watching; it is a project that promotes sustainability, structures the tourism offer, and encourages the professionalization of local tourism businesses.
Encompassing 60 km of coastline, the RBF (Bahia Whale Route) is one of the few areas in the world where it's possible to admire whales directly from land, without boats. Beyond whale watching, the route integrates experiences such as ecotourism, adventure tourism, and a rich immersion in local culture and history, showing that southern Santa Catarina offers much more than just sun and beach.
Girus Soluções em Turismo's role in creating the Southern Right Whale Route
The project, made possible by Sebrae and executed by Girus Soluções em Turismo, included, among other things, the creation and governance support of the route through technical committees composed of more than 150 member businesses/companies; evaluation of services provided and suggestions for improvements in more than 50 companies participating in the project; preparation of the briefing for the RBF's brochure and tourist map; development of the graphic art for the panoramic maps installed in the territory; creation and initial management of the RBF's social media; development of the conceptual design for the RBF's official website; and travel accompaniment by B.enchimarking to the Valdez Peninsula – Argentina etc.
Currently, the Southern Right Whale Route has several associated tourism businesses, including accommodation and gastronomic establishments that can be found on the website (https://rotabaleiafranca.com.br/) and official social media (@rotadabaleiafrancaThis is where information about the activities offered on the Southern Right Whale Route is disseminated.
As a consequence of the work carried out in the territory, in 2022, State Law No. 18.395/2022 legally established the Southern Right Whale Route in Santa Catarina, encompassing the municipalities of Imbituba, Garopaba, and Laguna. The legislation, which reinforces the relevance of the Southern Right Whale Route in the Santa Catarina tourism landscape, also instituted the Southern Right Whale Route Tourist Passport, with the purpose of promoting and disseminating tourist information about the Southern Right Whale Route, officially establishing tourist information about the Southern Right Whale Route through printed material, and increasing visibility to the main tourist attractions of the municipalities that comprise the Southern Right Whale Route.
